Dossier Traditional Latin Mass
Here you can find the state of the revision of the Historical timeline of the Roman Mass.
69-500 | In the first five centuries we find several testimonies of Church Fathers and other important writers about the Holy Mass Sacrifice and the Holy Eucharist, all of whom agree with the testimony of St. Paul. These writers come from all parts of the Christian world at that time. English - Nederlands (Dutch)
1570 | Quo Primum Tempore | The Latin Mass in use at the Vatican, which goes back to Gregory the Great, has been promulgated by Pius V with some small changes in accordance to the Council of Trent as obliged for the entire Roman Church. To protect the Liturgy from the heresies of the Reformations all liturgies that could not be proved to be elder then 200 year are forbidden. Latin - English - Nederlands (Dutch)

1959 | Announcement of the Council | "... a decided resolution to recall certain ancient forms of doctrinal affirmation and of wise provision of ecclesiastical discipline, which in the history of the Church in an epoch of renewal yielded fruits of extraordinary efficaciousness, through clarity of thought, through the solidarity of religious unity, through the living flame of Christian fervour in which we continue to see, even in regard to the well-being of life here on earth, abundant riches from "the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth" (Gen. 27:28).
Evidently, from this announcement Pope John XXIII clearly had in mind "to heal the Church in this epoch of renewal" to get the "fruits of extraordinary efficaciousness" when he announced the Council and started its preparations. Clearly, St. John XXIII expected the "fruits of extraordinary efficaciousness", a "spiritual renewal", not created by (Church)men but as a gift from the Holy Spirit after the Church had recalled certain ancient forms of doctrinal affirmation and of wise provision of ecclesiastical discipline. 1962 | Novo rubricarum corpore | Promulgation of the Latin Mass version 1962 (June 23) Latin One can reasonably ask about Pope John XXIII's motives for promulgating the 1962 Missale. On the one hand the ongoing reform was still not finished, while on the other hand the (falsified) preparatory document proposed ("embryonal"-)reforms (expression taken from Bugnini) that were in contradiction to the recent developments of the ongoing reform as well. This promulgation should be considered as a real Papal Statement regarding these proposed ("embrional"-)reforms
1962 | Sacrosanctum Oecumenicum Concilium Vaticanum Secundum. Series prima (1962) | "Schemata Constitutionum et Decretorum de quibus disceptabitur in Concilii sessionibus". [Latin (pdf)] Part one (of four) of a series of volumes containing schemata (page 159 - 201 concerns the Preparatory Document on Liturgy) that were to be discussed by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council. This volume was distributed in July 1962, three months before the start of the Council (= July 8); the Fathers were asked to submit any comments, and a small number of them did so (These responses can be found here in Latin in Acta Synodalia, Appendix prima, pp. 69-350)

1962 | Gaudet Mater Ecclesia | In this opening address of the Second Vatican Council, Pope St. John XXIII makes very clear that the Council was not allowed to change one iota of the Church Teachings: He stated: "we like to hear in the memories and the merits of the more recent and ancient Pontiffs, our predecessors" that "the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine should be guarded and taught more efficaciously" and that the Council "should never depart from the sacred patrimony of truth received from the Fathers", which "is presumed to be well known and familiar to all". Therefore "the Church's solicitude to promote and defend truth derives from the fact that, according to the plan of God, who wills all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth", whereas "the truth of the Lord will remain forever". 2007 | Responsa ad Questiones de Aliquinus Sententiis ad Doctrinam de Ecclesia Pertinentibus | (June 29) The consequent duty of theologians to expound with greater clarity the diverse aspects of ecclesiology has resulted in a flowering of writing in this field. In fact it has become evident that this theme is a most fruitful one which, however, has also at times required clarification by way of precise definition and correction, for instance in the declaration Mysterium Ecclesiae (1973), the Letter addressed to the Bishops of the Catholic Church Communionis notio (1992), and the declaration Dominus Iesus (2000), all published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The vastness of the subject matter and the novelty of many of the themes involved continue to provoke theological reflection. Among the many new contributions to the field, some are not immune from erroneous interpretation which in turn give rise to confusion and doubt. A number of these interpretations have been referred to the attention of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Given the universality of Catholic doctrine on the Church, the Congregation wishes to respond to these questions by clarifying the authentic meaning of some ecclesiological expressions used by the magisterium which are open to misunderstanding in the theological debate. Question 1: Did the Second Vatican Council change the Catholic doctrine on the Church? Response: This was exactly what John XXIII said at the beginning of the Council.[4] Paul VI affirmed it [5] and commented in the act of promulgating the Constitution Lumen gentium: "There is no better comment to make than to say that this promulgation really changes nothing of the traditional doctrine. What Christ willed, we also will. What was, still is. What the Church has taught down through the centuries, we also teach. In simple terms that which was assumed, is now explicit; that which was uncertain, is now clarified; that which was meditated upon, discussed and sometimes argued over, is now put together in one clear formulation" [6]. The Bishops repeatedly expressed and fulfilled this intention [7]. Latin - English - French - German - Italian - Spanish - Portuguese - Nederlands (Dutch) pdf-format
2007 | Summorum Pontificum | (July 7) The Supreme Pontiffs have to this day shown constant concern that the Church of Christ should offer worthy worship to the Divine Majesty, "for the praise and glory of his name" and "the good of all his holy Church". As from time immemorial, so too in the future, it is necessary to maintain the principle that "each particular Church must be in accord with the universal Church not only regarding the doctrine of the faith and sacramental signs, but also as to the usages universally received from apostolic and unbroken tradition. These are to be observed not only so that errors may be avoided, but also that the faith may be handed on in its integrity, since the Church's rule of prayer (lex orandi) corresponds to her rule of faith (lex credendi)". 2007 | I | Letter to the Bishops | With great trust and hope, I am consigning to you as Pastors the text of a new Apostolic Letter "Motu Proprio data" on the use of the Roman liturgy prior to the reform of 1970. The document is the fruit of much reflection, numerous consultations and prayer. News reports and judgments made without sufficient information have created no little confusion. There have been very divergent reactions ranging from joyful acceptance to harsh opposition, about a plan whose contents were in reality unknown. This document was most directly opposed on account of two fears, which I would like to address somewhat more closely in this letter. [4] John XXIII, Address of 11 October 1962: "...The Council...wishes to transmit Catholic doctrine, whole and entire, without alteration or deviation...To be sure, at the present time, it is necessary that Christian doctrine in its entirety, and with nothing taken away from it, is accepted with renewed enthusiasm, and serene and tranquil adherence... it is necessary that the very same doctrine be understood more widely and more profoundly as all those who sincerely adhere to the Christian, Catholic and Apostolic faith strongly desire ... it is necessary that this certain and unchangeable doctrine, to which is owed the obedience of faith, be explored and expounded in the manner required by our times. For the deposit of faith itself, or the truths which are contained in our venerable doctrine, are one thing; another thing is the way in which they are expressed, with however the same meaning and signification": AAS 54 [1962] 791-792

[7] The Council wished to express the identity of the Church of Christ with the Catholic Church. This is clear from the discussions on the decree Unitatis redintegratio. The Schema of the Decree was proposed on the floor of the Council on 23.9.1964 with a Relatio (Act Syn III/II 296-344). The Secretariat for the Unity of Christians responded on 10.11.1964 to the suggestions sent by Bishops in the months that followed (Act Syn III/VII 11-49). Herewith are quoted four texts from this Expensio modorum concerning this first response.

"Some Comments on the Apostolic Letter Traditionis Custodes by Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the Latin Mass Society. This document will be a grave disappointment to those many priests and lay Catholics who responded to the words of Pope St John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, who encouraged the use of the earlier liturgical tradition, calling it a rightful aspiration and riches for the Church, respectively. These Catholics have worked hard over many years, particularly since 2007, to build up the unity of the Church, which as the Second Vatican Council declared dõs not depend on liturgical uniformity but on unity of faith under the Pope (Sacrosanctum Concilium 37 & Orientalium Ecclesiarum 2). |

Articles on 'Traditionis Custodes'
- "England and Wales Respond to the Motu Proprio" by Theo Howard
The traditional community in England and Wales is of notable importance to the wider traditional movement. One of the unbroken streams by which Divine Providence saw fit to continue the flow of the Church's Liturgical Tradition to the present, following the post-conciliar official hostility towards that Tradition from many quarters, was in England and Wales through the famous 'Agatha Christie indult' of 1971 - "New Papal Interview Contains Revealing Remarks on Traditionis Custodes" by Matt Gaspers
In a lengthy new interview with COPE, a Spanish radio station, Pope Francis fields questions on a wide range of topics,[1] including his Apostolic Letter Traditionis Custodes (July 16, 2021) that effectively abolished Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum (July 7, 2007) and severely restricts access to the Traditional Latin Mass for priests and laity alike. - "In Defense of Preserving Readings in Latin" by Peter A. Kwasniewski
In light of Pope Francis's frivolous and offensive remark about how doing the readings at Mass in Latin would be "like laughing at the Word of God", it seemed opportune to republish here at Rorate an article first published eight years ago in The Latin Mass magazine (Summer 2013), with slight revisions. Although my thinking on all of these points has developed and deepened, it has done so in precisely the same direction. Those who, moreover, think that Francis's July 16 motu proprio requires replacing Latin readings with vernacular ones should read two articles that argue the contrary, here and here. - "Houston, We Have A Problem: The Latin Mass" By Kenneth J. Wolfe
Cardinal Cupich did not go this far. Cardinal Tobin did not go this far. Cardinal O'Malley did not go this far. For some reason, Cardinal DiNardo -- considered by most to be much friendlier toward tradition -- was the first U.S. cardinal to restrict the traditional Latin Mass. The question that should be asked of him is: Why? Of all the problems in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston -- and there are many -- why are a handful of traditional Latin Masses such a high priority to restrict? - "Against Sedevacantism: Errors Concerning Supplied Jurisdiction" by John F. Salza, Esq.
In light of Pope Francis' disastrous pontificate, including his unjust and imprudent motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, many impacted Catholics are being tempted to leave the Church and take refuge in any place where the traditional Mass is offered. - "The Bugnini Construction Company Builds Liturgical Fairy Tales" by Lee Fratantuono, PhD
As we approach fifty days after the motu proprio, it is crucial to repeat this fundamental point: the document is founded on a falsehood so glaring and intellectually unsustainable that it inspires admiration for its audacity and flagrant disregard of reality. "The liturgical books promulgated by Saint Paul VI and Saint John Paul II ... are the unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite." - "Tradition Devoured by the Magisterium" reported by Peter Kwasniewski
When Benedict XVI took office as Bishop of Rome in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, he said in his homily: "The Pope is not an absolute monarch whose thoughts and wills are law." And while still prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he wrote: "The Pope is not an absolute monarch whose will is law. He is rather the guardian of authentic Tradition and thus the first guarantor of obedience. He cannot do whatever comes into his head and is thus able to oppose those people who, for their part, want to do whatever comes into their heads. Its rules are not those of arbitrary power, but those of obedience in faith" - "Francis, in interview: Actually, the Traditional Mass was not abolished, I just wanted a "constructive reordering" of Summorum Pontificum..." by Rorate Caeli

The blog Where Peter Is, a site which seems to promote a limitless ultramontanism exempt from the requirements of tradition, magisterial consistency, or reason itself - published an article by Terence Sweeney called "Pope Francis: Guardian of Tradition". The article launches broadsides against the clericocentrism of the Tridentine rite and the need for a new Mass that would at last allow the people to have their proper role. - "After 14 Years, Pontifical North American College (Rome) cancels all Traditional Latin Masses, and all TLM training" by Rorate Caeli

Lex orandi - lex credendi
On July 16, 2021, the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Apostolic Exhortation in the form of a Motu proprio Traditionis custodes on the use of the Roman Liturgy before the 1970 reform was promulgated. Article 1 reads, "The liturgical books promulgated by Popes St. Paul VI and St. John Paul II in conformity with the decrees of the Second Vatican Council are the sole expression (l'unica espressione) of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite". - "Revenge of the Rigid: On Rejecting Grillo, Primitivism, and the Electric Slide August 30, 2021" by Mark Nowakowski, PhD
I often like to imagine how the radical liturgical reforms after Vatican II would have proceeded in the internet age. Certainly the quick availability of information and the means by which to network globally in seeking answers would have made the position of the extreme wing of reformers more precarious, and certainly the analog "fog of war" which the Bugniniites hid behind would have been more easily penetrated. - "Cancelling Pope Benedict: Reflections on a recent article and the hermeneutic of rupture" by Peter Kwasniewski
Professor Martin Madar has written in La Croix (August 9, 2021) a revealing article concerning the larger project represented by Traditionis Custodes. It bears the title "Pope Francis should correct his predecessor on another point". The project here is one to which all Catholics, especially bishops, should pay close attention because it reveals what is really at stake in the current debates about the future of the traditional Mass. It is not so much the individual author who matters: he stands in for an ecclesiastical party that is very prominent today; were it otherwise, Catholics outside the ivory tower could just ignore this article and others like it. - "PRAY - For Traditional Institutes and Traditional Seminaries" by Rorate Caeli
- "Rekindling Eucharistic amazement: Three mystical experiences of a priest " by Peter Kwasniewski
The rubrics of the traditional liturgy are all deliberate and with a purpose; those pertaining to the Holy Eucharist remind the priest he is handling the sacred mysteries, which are a heavenly food unlike any other. - "Op-Ed: With 'Traditionis custodes', Francis Promotes Disunity" by Archbishop Aguer, Emeritus of La Plata, Argentina
The current Pontiff declares that he wishes to pursue even further the constant search for ecclesial communion and to make this purpose effective, he eliminates the work of his predecessors by placing arbitrary limits and obstacles to what they established with intra-ecclesial ecumenical intention and respect for the freedom of priests and faithful! It promotes ecclesial communion in reverse. The new measures are a regrettable step backwards. - "Will the Real Lex Orandi of the Roman Rite Please Stand Up? A Comparison of the Old and New Feasts of St. Louis" By Peter Kwasniewski
Today is the feast of the greatest of Christian kings, St. Louis IX (1214-1270). In light of the attempt of some to declare the Novus Ordo the sole lex orandi of the Roman Rite, it seems worthwhile to do a simple comparison between the traditional Propers for this feastday and those of its modern replacement in 1969. Pay close attention, as usual, to the shifts in political theology, in the concept of merit, the primacy of the supernatural, the relation between nature and grace, and the recognition of the existence of enemies. Not to mention whether the Propers "fit" the saint or not. - "Traditionis Custodes: 40 Days Later" by Allan Ruhl
Now can see better where we stand.
The traditional Roman Rite has no shortage of enemies in the Roman Catholic Church, especially in the generation of Pope Francis. Regarding the Latin Mass (TLM), Francis' fellow Jesuit Fr. Thomas Reese said back in April that "Children and young people should not be allowed to attend such Masses". I don't think I've ever heard a more condescending and clericalist statement in my entire life. Obviously Fr. Reese was worried about the youthful demographic in the Church who attend the TLM and who one day will hold positions of power within the Church and the Vatican itself. - "The Francis Pontificate is the Catechism of Hypocrisy" by J. Basil Dannebohm
During his general audience on August 25th, Pope Francis spoke of how hypocritical behavior damages Church unity.
"Hypocrisy in the Church is particularly detestable, and unfortunately there is hypocrisy in the Church, and there are many hypocritical Christians and ministers", said the bishop of Rome. - "Is Traditionis Custodes calling for more Latin?" By Joseph Shaw
A number of American writers claim that Traditionis Custodes should spur priests to make their celebration of Mass more reflective of the liturgical tradition. Others commentators, including a number of bishops implementing it, apparently think the opposite.
Those in favor of the first interpretation can cite a couple of passages from the Letter to Bishops which accompanied Traditionis Custodes. Pope Francis quotes Pope Benedict complaining about liturgical abuses-"unbearable distortions"; later he remarks: - "Defense of the Motu Proprio Collapsing in Contradictions" by Joseph Shaw, PhD
Pope Francis has offered two reasons for wishing to bring celebrations of the Traditional Mass to an end: attitudes of some of the faithful which have become associated with this form of the Mass, and the idea that the unity of the Church requires a unity of liturgical rite. Accordingly, some of his defenders have focused on one of these points, and some on the other. Both are having difficulty explaining and justifying Pope Francis' action. - "When a Bishop Outlaws Private Traditional Masses" by Peter Kwasniewski, PhD
In a three-page letter dated August 20, 2021, and addressed to "Dear Brothers in Christ", Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, apparently in an effort to show that he is more Bergoglian than Bergoglio, takes a hearty step beyond what is demanded by a strict interpretation of Pope Francis's motu proprio Traditionis Custodes [TC]. In spite of the fact that Pittsburgh is one of the United States' most depressed and collapsing dioceses-as can be seen from relentless parish closures that have left the city pockmarked with churches converted into restaurants, bars, penthouses, and other secular venues-the infusion of spiritual energy from the wellsprings of tradition is evidently too risky to allow. Better a dead church than a traditional one. - "The St. Gallen Mafia and the Latin Mass" by Julia Meloni
About a decade ago, in a Southwestern church in a run-down part of town, I saw it for the first time.
From a back pew, I glimpsed something beautiful, perfect. Seeing the priest celebrate it was like being plunged into some heavenly choreography from the Book of Revelation. That first Latin Mass surpassed my understanding, but I intuitively grasped one thing: kneeling for the mystical Roman Canon, I knew my soul wanted to fall down in worship. - "The Morality of Correcting the Pope" by Michael Sirilla, PhD
Editor's note: with the apparent attempt of the Roman Pontiff to suppress the traditional Roman rite, the following text may prove helpful from OnePeterFive contributing editor, Michael Sirilla of Franciscan University. - "Priests: Be Men of God, and the Faithful Will Rally Behind You" by Timothy Flanders
Vatican News recently gave their headline as "Pope Francis: 'Liturgy needs to return to center of Christian faith'". The words of the Roman Pontiff were addressed to an Italian liturgical conference with the theme: "Where two or three are gathered ..." - "Francis' Cruelty - Costa Rica: Fr. Varela, the First Priest Suspended for Celebrating the Traditional Mass (and the New Mass in Latin!) Following the new Motu Proprio" by Augustine Aksala
I feel the need to write this chronicle due to the concern expressed in different parts of the world to know clearly what is happening in Costa Rica after the promulgation of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes.
On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI published his apostolic letter in the form of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum. With this document, the Pope established that it was licit to celebrate the sacraments with the liturgical books prior to the post-conciliar liturgical reform. Thus, in the Roman Rite there was an ordinary form and an extraordinary form, and no priest needed any permission to celebrate Holy Mass with the 1962 missal, edited by St. John XXIII. Moreover, the faithful who requested it were to be admitted to such celebrations - "The little boy whose existence is a threat to the new kind of Church desired by Francis" ...
A young boy. A symbol of a wide open future ahead of us. - "Liberal attacks the Traditional Mass: NCR v. Michael Brandon Dougherty"; By Joseph Shaw
Michael Sean Winters has written an attack, mainly on an article by Michael Brendan Dougherty (MBD), and it is interest to contrast MBD's sometimes artless sincerity and distress with Winters' manipulation of the facts and instrumentalisation of Pope Francis. For Winters Traditionis Custodes is not about the liturgy at all: it is an instrument of political power. This is what theology and spirituality has come down to for Winters and his little gang. - "Andrea Grillo: The Mind Behind the Motu Proprio"; by Peter Kwasniewski
Andrea Grillo (born 1961) is a professor of Sacramental Theology and Philosophy of Religion at the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anselm in Rome (Sant'Anselmo) and of Liturgy in Padua at the Abbey of Santa Giustina. With the promulgation of Pope Francis's motu proprio of July 16th, 2021, Traditionis Custodes, he has become a more important figure in Catholic thought. Many indications point to Professor Grillo as an author or at least inspirer of the document, serving as the Pontiff's "house" liturgist and theologian, as he is often called in Rome. He joins many others from Sant'Anselmo who have exercised a disproportionate progressive influence. - "How the Assumption of Mary parallels the Ascension of Christ"; by Peter Kwasniewski
Mary bears our needs and prayers in her Immaculate Heart, and presents them to the Savior of us all. She is borne into heaven to emulate, enter into, and extend as Mediatrix of all graces the intercessory role of Jesus Christ, the one Mediator between God and man. - "MASS OF THE AGES - First episode of the documentary trilogy on the Traditional Mass"; br Rorate Ceali
With a goal of reaching 10 million Catholics, an incredible new documentary on the traditional Latin Mass premiered on YouTube last night, and can now be watched any time with the entire family. - "Cardinal Sarah: A Church that Claims a Reversal of Her Liturgy is a Church with no Credibility"; by Cardinal Robert Sarah in Le Figaro and reported by RoraTE caeli
Doubt has taken hold of Western thought. Intellectuals and politicians alike describe the same impression of collapse. Faced with the breakdown of solidarity and the disintegration of identities, some turn to the Catholic Church. ... But is the Church capable of responding to these calls? Certainly, she has already played this role of guardian and transmitter of civilization. - "Tradition and Traitors: How to tell the difference "; By Father Richard Gennaro Cipolla
The opening line of the recent Motu Proprio from Pope Francis begins with two Latin words: Traditionis Custodes. This refers to the bishops of the Church, including the Bishop of Rome with his special role in the Church. What these words mean in English is "guardians of the Tradition". The bishops are the guardians of Catholic Tradition. We all know what a guardian is, someone who takes careful care of something or someone given to him to make sure that what he has been entrusted with is not damaged but rather is nourished and preserved in an authentic way. But many Catholics do not fully understand what the Tradition of the Catholic faith is. One cannot be a guardian of something that one does not understand. - "The Prayers for the Feast of St Lawrence in the Post-Vatican II Liturgical Reforms" by Matthew Hazell
Today's feast of St Lawrence gives us yet another example of the differences, both great and small, between the prayers of the traditional and reformed Roman Rites. The collect in the 1962 Missale Romanum (CO 960) reads as follows: - "Letter to a future religious: God calls us to the fullness of tradition, not the mere minimum" by Peter Kwasniewski
The Church's liturgical traditions, which she practiced so consistently and guarded so jealously throughout her history, have truth and right behind them, and the long-term renewal of the Church will come especially through an ever-greater embrace of these treasures. - "A Public Letter from Italian Laity: Francis, enough! Stop the ideological Civil War in the Church" by Rorate Caeli
This heartfelt letter by several Italian lay people was published today in Italian daily IL FOGLIO. The laity are exhausted after 8 years of war conducted from on top: we want peace. Stop, Francis, just stop. - "Vatican sources: Pope Francis will use 'spy system', left-wing cardinal to suppress Traditional Latin Mass" by Maike Hickson
In conversations with different sources - all of them Vatican experts or members of the Vatican who wished to remain anonymous - LifeSite has learned that there is an expectation that Pope Francis intends to implement his motu proprio essentially suppressing the Traditional Latin Mass with the help of a spy system and especially of the head of the Congregation of Religious, Cardinal João Braz de Aviz. Braz de Aviz has a record of harshly persecuting tradition-oriented religious communities, most prominently the Franciscans of the Immaculate. In his July 16 motu proprio (art. 7), the Pope gave the Congregation for Religious, as well as the Congregation for Divine Worship under Archbishop Arthur Roche, the duty to supervise the implementation of his instructions. - "Archbishop Viganó on what priests should do in light of Traditionis Custodes" by Maike Hickson
Allow me to say first of all that in continuing to celebrate the Mass of Pope Saint Pius V no priest performs any act of disobedience, but on the contrary he exercises his right sanctioned by God, which not even the Pope can revoke. - "The Witness of the Laity to the Traditional Roman Mass:The Heart of the Matter" By Father Richard Gennaro Cipolla
I received a copy of the letter which follows from a parishioner at the diocesan Parish of St. Pius X, in Fairfield, Connecticut. The letter was written to the pastor of the parish to express his thanksgiving for the presence of the Traditional Roman Mass in his life and that of his whole family. The letter touched me deeply for its understanding of faith, of Tradition, and the genuine expression of joy in having discovered a pearl of great price in the parish celebrations of the Traditional Roman Mass. - "Speaking to the Masses " by Kenneth J. Wolfe
Pope Francis' recent attack on the traditional Latin Mass and those who attend and offer it has produced quite the outcry around the world. Yet another example of the unintended Francis Effect, slapping around faithful Catholics has blown up in the face of the Vatican. When the Jesuit, left-wing America magazine and normally anti-TLM neoconservative George Weigel both voice public criticism of restricting the freedom to offer and attend Latin Masses, clearly the Vatican roll-out of Francis' hit-job can be considered a massive communications failure based on bad policy and poor planning. - "The Pope's Boundenness to Tradition as a Legislative Limit: Replying to Ultramontanist Apologetics" Full Text of Dr. Kwasniewski's Denver Lecture.
The following lecture was given at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Littleton, Colorado, on July 31, 2021. The video has been posted at YouTube; however, the text below features extensive endnotes that contain much important material. My goal, especially in the wake of Traditionis Custodes, is to refute the all-too-plentiful Catholic apologists who-proof-texting magisterial documents the way their Protestant counterparts proof-text St. Paul - maintain that the pope has absolute executive, legislative, and judicial power over the liturgy. I argue, in contrast, that papal power exists within an historical, ecclesial context that conditions and limits its legitimate exercise, and therefore also grounds the right of the faithful to resist egregious violations of immemorial custom and venerable tradition. In short, this is a defense of the very foundations of the traditionalist movement in the Catholic Church. - "On the moves against the Traditional Mass. It's all about the Violence: Why would anyone pretending to be of Christ's Church lash out at the lambs?" by Archbishop Thomas E. Gullickson
In the wake of the cancellation of the Pontifical Mass in the National Shrine of the United States that he was going to celebrate on August 14, 2021, Archbishop Thomas Edward Gullickson, former ambassador (Nuncio) of the Holy See before several nations- most recently, Switzerland, until last year - wrote the following two notes in his personal blog. - "Two Views on Liturgical Reform: Joseph Shaw (Latin Mass Society) and Anthony Ruff (Pray Tell)" by Joseph Shaw
Joseph Shaw, chairman of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, and Fr. Anthony Ruff OSB, moderator of the Pray Tell blog, respond to nine questions on liturgical reform and the recent motu proprio Traditionis custodes of Pope Francis. - "Tradition stands above the pope. The old Mass is as a matter of principle beyond the pope's authority to prohibit." ()" by Martin Mosebach
In Traditionis Custodes, Pope Francis has given a command. He does this at a time when papal authority is unraveling as never before. The Church has long since advanced to an ungovernable stage. But the pope battles on. He abandons his dearest principles-"listening," "tenderness," "mercy"-that refuse to judge or give orders. Pope Francis is roused by something that troubles him: the tradition of the Church. - "Italian Bishops and Cardinals were the origin and moving force behind Traditionis Custodes (an Interview with Fr. Claude Barthe)" an interview with Fr. Claude Barthe
Fr. Claude Barthe is a seasoned veteran of the pre-Summorum "liturgical wars", now rekindled by Francis in his edict "Traditionis custodes". Living in Paris, Fr. Barthe was also the main chaplain for the Summorum Pontificum pilgrimages that took thousands of Traditional Catholics to pray and attend the Holy Mass in the Traditional Roman Rite in Saint Peter's Basilica during the past decade. - "High-ranking Swiss priest discusses defects of Novus Ordo Mass and the Church's need to listen to the faithful" by Martin Grichting, former vicar general of the diocese of Chur and translated by Maike Hickson
The English writer Gilbert K. Chesterton once said that Protestants believe that God can only be worshipped by way of thinking. Catholics, he said, would do it with all their senses. He said this even before the liturgical reform of Vatican II. For today we have arrived at more or less this Protestant position... - "All to Rome in Late October! "Summorum Pontificum" Pilgrimage Will Take Place" by Fr. Claude Barthe, Pilgrimage Chaplain
As scheduled, we shall be undertaking our Pilgrimage of the Traditional Mass in Rome October 29-31. From its very beginning it has been about giving thanks for the acknowledgement by the Apostolic See of rights of the usus antiquior. Furthermore, it has always also been about begging God each year to sustain us throughout the world in our efforts to promote the flourishing and spread of this liturgy, which has been the lifeblood of Rome for at least a millennium. - "A law must be accepted to be valid" Cardinal Brandmüller on the Motu Proprio by Peter Kwasniewski
With his motu proprio Traditionis custodes, Pope Francis has practically unleashed a hurricane that has upset those Catholics who feel attached to the Tridentine rite of Mass revived by Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum. From now on-according to the essential declaration of Traditionis custodes-Benedict's Summorum Pontificum will be in large measure suspended and the celebration of Holy Mass, with some exceptions, will be allowed only according to the Missal of Paul VI. A look at the blogger scene and other media outlets reveals how a global protest has erupted against this document, which is unusual in form and content - "Replying to JD Flynn (Pillar): Traditionis Custodes and the Authority of the Pope" by Joseph Shaw
In the Pillar, JD Flynn criticises 'the siren voices calling for disobedience, or casting into doubt the authority of the Vicar of Christ'. He has earlier quoted Cardinal Raymond Burke, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, and Bishop Robertus Mutsaerts, but he leaves it to his readers to connect what he quotes them as saying with 'calls for disobedience' and 'casting into doubt the authority of the Vicar of Christ'. This seems on the face of it a serious injustice, and a failure to give these individuals the respect due to their office and indeed to every Catholic, who has a right to his good name: see Canon 220. - "Dubia cardinal: With Traditionis Custodes, 'Pope Francis has virtually unleashed a hurricane'" by Maike Hickson
Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, one of the two remaining dubia cardinals, has issued a statement criticizing Pope Francis's motu proprio Traditionis custodes essentially abrogating the traditional Latin Mass. This cardinal sees that the Pope has unleashed a 'hurricane' and proposes the idea that there are indeed laws that, when heavily opposed or ignored, never effectively become law. He gives an example from Church history of such a law being effectively ignored and invites Catholics who are indignant about this new motu proprio to remain calm and to have patience. - "Head of SSPX on Traditionis Custodes: 'The era of the hermeneutics of continuity ... is radically over'" by Maike Hickson
The problem is not simply liturgical, aesthetic or purely technical', Don Davide Pagliarani went on to say. 'The problem is simultaneously doctrinal, moral, spiritual, ecclesiological and liturgical. In a nutshell, it is a problem that affects all aspects of the Church''s life, without exception. It is a question of faith'. - "Good old Catholic prayer books and the benefit of 'obscure' saints in the calendar" by Peter Kwasniewski
In the "bad old days" that Vatican II cheerleaders have to exaggerate in order to make their lame duck council look like something other than a disaster, it is said that the laity were passive, disconnected from the liturgy, lacking in a personal prayer life, and unaware of their dignity as "the People of God." - "DC Pontifical Mass: CANCELED" by Kenneth J. Wolfe
A pontifical high Mass had been planned for 14 August in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. It was actually supposed to be offered a year ago, but was postponed due to COVID restrictions. The music was all set. The clergy were all lined up. - "A pope would be schismatic... 'if he were to change all the liturgical rites of the Church that have been upheld by apostolic tradition'"; (Francisco Suàrez / Klaus Gamber)Only four years had passed since the publication of the new Missal when Pope Paul VI surprised the Catholic world with a new Ordo Missæ, dated April 6, 1969. The revision made in 1965 did not touch the traditional liturgical rite. In accordance with the mandate of Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, it had been primarily concerned with removing some later additions to the Order of the Mass. The publication of the Ordo Missæ of 1969, however, created a new liturgical rite. In other words, the traditional liturgical rite had not simply been revised as the Council had intended. Rather, it had been completely abolished, and a couple of years later, the traditional liturgical rite was, in fact, forbidden. All this leads to the question: Dõs such a radical reform follow the tradition of the Church?

In a fiery homily, Cardinal Raymond Burke described the events to which the third secret of Fatima is referring as occurring currently, pointing to the "practical apostasy of our time, that is, the going away from Christ by many in the Church." - "Votive Mass of the Immaculate Heart of Mary"; Homily by Cardinal Raymond Burke at World Apostolate of Fatima U.S.A. National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima Washington, New Jersey
It was on the occasion of the July 13th apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherd children, Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto, and the Servant of God Lucia dos Santos, that she revealed the third part of her Message or Secret. - "Traditionis Custodes as a Hermeneutic of Envy"; by by Anne Hendershott
While there have been some notable attempts to help us understand the rationale behind the most recent motu proprio, Traditionis Custodes, the published reflection on the document by Italian Professor Massimo Viglione stands out because it is the only one that recognizes the sin of envy that is driving this latest papal attempt to destroy the Traditional Latin Mass. - "Traditionis Custodes vs. St John XXIII: Guest Article by Dr Nancy Llewellyn"; by Gregory DiPippo
We are profoundly grateful to Dr Nancy Llewellyn for sharing with us these reflections on Pope St John XXIII's Apostolic Constitution Veterum Sapientia, and its relevance to the recent motu proprio. - "Was the Sacred Liturgy made for the pope, or the pope for the Sacred Liturgy?"; by John A. Monaco
The liturgy has a logical priority over the pope, for without the liturgy, the Church has no reason to exist, nor any ability to participate in the divine life of the Holy Trinity. - "A New Reformation"; by Francis X. Maier
We need to remember - and remembering is a sacred task - that there will be no real novus ordo seclorum, no genuinely "new order of the ages," without the kingship of Jesus Christ. - "Archbishop Sheen's Warning of a Crisis in Christendom"; by John Clark
Legitimate differences in liturgical tradition, when united by belief, do not hinder unity but rather contribute toward it. - "In the Midst of Crisis, Be Driven by Faith, Not by Fear"; by Peter Kwasniewski
In our days, we are seeing an intensification of the spiritual battle as the situation within the Catholic Church continues to deteriorate. Battles have casualties, and some of those casualties are Catholics who have lost their faith or are tempted to leave the Church because of the outrageous corruption, infidelity, and cowardice of its leaders and the seeming lack of any coherent solution amidst anarchy. - "VERY IMPORTANT! - 15 August 2021 - World-wide Consecration to the Immaculate Heart by all TLM communities"; As endorsed by several fellow Catholic blogs and pages, we urge you to get your Traditional Latin Mass community to join this global effort. This is very important! We can only win this generational battle through prayer and through the intercession of the Victorious Mother The formula is available here.
- "It's Time to Imitate Our Forefathers: Never Give Up!"; by Peter Kwasniewski
The past two weeks have been highly emotional for many Catholics. We felt anger, and justifiably so. We talked incessantly about what had happened, about what might happen in the future, about how we could respond, and about the meaning of it all. - "The Four Olds and the Embattled Traditional Catholic Mass"; Jane Stannus
"Destroy the Four Olds." This slogan was central to the Chinese Cultural Revolution, launched in Beijing in 1966. What were the Four Olds? Old Ideas, Old Culture, Old Habits and Old Customs. The destruction began simply, with the renaming of streets, stores, and even people, who exchanged their traditional Chinese names for revolutionary ones like "Determined Red." - "Can We Love Pope Francis?"; by Kennedy Hall
When Traditionis Custodes is carefully considered, it's clear that it's not just an indictment against the celebration of the 'Old Mass', but instead an attempt to squash the traditionalist revival in the Church. In fact, some commentators have gone as far as calling the motu proprio a declaration of total war against traditionalists everywhere. It's hard to argue with this sentiment. - "Revenge of the Modern Liturgists"; by James Baresel
It was August 1940. Churchill was fighting the Battle of Britain. Half of Europe was under the Nazi boot. The Catholic Church in Germany was being persecuted, and the German bishops were gathered for their annual conference. To what grave matters might they have devoted their energies at such a momentous time? Being German bishops they could think of nothing better than to protect against the Holy See liturgists who were undermining their attempts to refashion the Church's liturgical theology and discipline. - "Canonical Guidance from the Latin Mass Society on Traditionis Custodes"; With thanks to Edward Pentin for breaking the story on the National Catholic Register, with some helpful commentary, the Latin Mass Society is pleased to present the fruits of our consultations with a number of Canon lawyers, in a short document available on our website.
- ">Traditionis custodes and unhelpful observations"; Analysis by JD Flynn
It has been nearly two weeks since Pope Francis promulgated Traditionis custodes, a legal document that dramatically remade the rules governing the Extraordinary Form of the Mass - which, according to at least some interpretations, probably ought not be called that anymore. - "Replying to JD Flynn (Pillar): Traditionis Custodes and the Authority of the Pope"; by Joseph Shaw
- "Traditionis Custodes vs. St John XXIII: "; Guest Article by Dr Nancy Llewellyn introduced by Gregory DiPippo
We are profoundly grateful to Dr Nancy Llewellyn for sharing with us these reflections on Pope St John XXIII's Apostolic Constitution Veterum Sapientia, and its relevance to the recent motu proprio.

- "Two Views on Liturgical Reform: Joseph Shaw (Latin Mass Society) and Anthony Ruff (Pray Tell)"; This is being posted simultaneously here at Rorate and on Pray Tell.
Joseph Shaw, chairman of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, and Fr. Anthony Ruff OSB, moderator of Pray Tell blog, respond to nine questions on liturgical reform and the recent motu proprio Traditionis custodes of Pope Francis. - "Ruff and Shaw on Traditionis Custodes and the Reform"; by Joseph Shaw
This was not a dialogue, but simply juxtaposes our answers to the same questions. I am grateful to Fr Ruff for the opportunity to take part in this exercise. Fr Ruff's answers, which are from a very different place from my own, are characterised by respect and charity, and give a coherent account of the reasoning of at least some of those who welcome Traditionis Custodes. This makes them interesting and useful to those who want to try to understand this position; I hope my answers will be useful to the readers of Pray Tell. - "DC Pontifical Mass: CANCELED"; by Kenneth J. Wolfe
A pontifical high Mass had been planned for 14 August in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. It was actually supposed to be offered a year ago, but was postponed due to COVID restrictions. The music was all set. The clergy were all lined up. EWTN was going to air it live. - "On the moves against the Traditional Mass, "It's all about the Violence": "Why would anyone pretending to be of Christ's Church lash out at the lambs?""; by Archbishop Thomas E. Gullickson
In the wake of the cancellation of the Pontifical Mass in the National Shrine of the United States that he was going to celebrate on August 14, 2021, Archbishop Thomas Edward Gullickson, former ambassador (Nuncio) of the Holy See before several nations- most recently, Switzerland, until last year - wrote the following two notes in his personal blog: - "Reality and the Fall of Man: Sermon for Pentecost X"; by Father Richard G. Cipolla
From the 7th chapter of St Paul's Epistle to the Romans: "I do not understand my own actions. For I do not what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate…So then it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me…I can will what is right, but I cannot do it." - ""Tradition stands above the pope. The old Mass is as a matter of principle beyond the pope's authority to prohibit." (Martin Mosebach)"; by Martin Mosebach.
In Traditionis Custodes, Pope Francis has given a command. He dõs this at a time when papal authority is unraveling as never before. The Church has long since advanced to an ungovernable stage. But the pope battles on. He abandons his dearest principles-"listening," "tenderness," "mercy"-that refuse to judge or give orders. Pope Francis is roused by something that troubles him: the tradition of the Church. . - "Italian Bishops and Cardinals were the origin and moving force behind Traditionis Custodes (an Interview with Fr. Claude Barthe)"; Interview with Fr. Claude Barthe
Fr. Claude Barthe is a seasoned veteran of the pre-Summorum "liturgical wars", now rekindled by Francis in his edict "Traditionis custodes". Living in Paris, Fr. Barthe was also the main chaplain for the Summorum Pontificum pilgrimages that took thousands of Traditional Catholics to pray and attend the Holy Mass in the Traditional Roman Rite in Saint Peter's Basilica during the past decade. - "Cardinal Brandmüller on the Motu Proprio: "A law must be accepted to be valid"";
With his motu proprio Traditionis custodes, Pope Francis has practically unleashed a hurricane that has upset those Catholics who feel attached to the "Tridentine" rite of Mass revived by Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum. From now on-according to the essential declaration of Traditionis custodes-Benedict's Summorum Pontificum will be in large measure suspended and the celebration of Holy Mass, with some exceptions, will be allowed only according to the Missal of Paul VI. A look at the blogger scene and other media outlets reveals how a global protest has erupted against this document, which is unusual in form and content. - "Traditionis Custodes: a disaster for interreligious dialogue and ecumenism"; by Joseph Shaw
If [Fr Thomas] Reese [on NCR] is concerned about ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, then he is faced with a different kind of problem. Traditionis Custodes has set the Church's relations with other religions back fifty years, and it is difficult to see how they will recover. - "Traditiones Custodes: unity vs. uniformity"; by Joseph Shaw
In his Letter to Bishops accompanying his Apostolic Letter Traditionis Custodes, among many things worthy of comment Pope Francis says that Pope Paul VI: "declared that the revision of the Roman Missal, carried out in the light of ancient liturgical sources, had the goal of permitting the Church to raise up, in the variety of languages, ‘a single and identical prayer,' that expressed her unity. This unity I intend to re-establish throughout the Church of the Roman Rite." - "t's Time to Imitate Our Forefathers: Never Give Up!"; by Peter Kwasniewski

For readers such as myself to be expected to examine the quoted remarks and look for possible support of these serious allegations is ridiculous and an invitation to uncharity. Flynn dõs not even give us a clue which of the three is implicated in these two alleged offences. Indeed, it might even be that Flynn would, if challenged, refer us instead to the unnamed others he vaguely refers to in the course of the article. However, the insinuation remains, it is serious, and it should be withdrawn.
